Letters of Intent (LOI) open: year-round

Assessment cut-off dates: 31 January and 30 June each year

Full proposals invited: February and July each year

Background

Breakthrough T1D, through its Type 1 Diabetes Clinical Research Network (T1DCRN), is launching the Innovative Concept Submissions Promoting Impactful Research (INSPIRE) Program.

We recognise that promising ideas don’t always align with traditional grant cycles or targeted funding calls, so we created INSPIRE to address this gap.

INSPIRE offers a year-round opportunity to submit concepts aligned with Breakthrough T1D’s research strategy. Designed to welcome submissions across disciplines, institutions, and stages of development, it serves as a strategic mechanism for sourcing and cultivating diverse, high potential ideas that can accelerate the next generation of breakthroughs.

This program will allow Breakthrough T1D to attract innovative ideas at all stages of development.

Key objectives

INSPIRE aims to:

  • strengthen alignment between research concepts and strategic funding opportunities
  • expand the diversity of our research portfolio through broader engagement with the research and innovation community
  • build stronger partnerships with researchers who are developing solutions with the potential to transform prevention, treatment, or cures for T1D

Please read the full terms here.

The funding opportunity

Breakthrough T1D prioritises investments with the highest potential to deliver new therapies, while also supporting research that addresses unmet needs in quality of life and care delivery.

INSPIRE will support ideas across five priority domains:

  1. early detection
  2. disease‑modifying therapies
  3. cell therapies
  4. improving lives
  5. growing the T1D research community

Applicants are encouraged to review Breakthrough T1D’s research strategy to ensure strong alignment.

Note: INSPIRE does not provide direct funding at the Letter of Intent (LOI) stage. Instead, selected LOIs may be invited to submit a full proposal for consideration by the Breakthrough T1D Australia Board, subject to the availability of funds. Projects may be funded for a maximum of three years, with all funding concluding no later than 30 June 2030.

Submission process

LOI submissions are open all year round. LOIs received by 31 January will be considered for the February invitation round, and LOIs received by 30 June will be considered for the July invitation round. LOIs received after a cut-off date will remain eligible and will be considered in the next applicable invitation round.

Submissions must be lodged via our grants management system, RMS360.

Applicants are encouraged to talk to Breakthrough T1D before submission to ensure alignment with the scope and objectives.
